How to Knee Down Practice of Hang off

Knee down is a dream of the motorcycle rider.
I practiced seriously. Then, unexpectedly I found it was easy!
The world changed when I became knee down rider.
I want to divide this impression with everyone.

- Practice method

1 Preparation for vehicle (Any bike is OK).
2 Preparation for protectors of your knee (Anything is OK).
3 Search for the vacant lot with width more than two lanes.
4 Practice circle ride
5 Hung your outside knee on the tank, and shift your hip from the seat internally.
(It is OK even if not completely shifting.)
6 Increase the angle of bank until your knee hit the ground.

Only this? Yes. Basic method is only this.
If you have a nice sense, it will be stories about an hour or so.
It cost me about two hours.

- My practice diary

・Chance
I will ride CBR1000RR. Before buying that big one, I wanted to get my knee down skill. So I tried to knee down readily.
I found that it was very easy, if I have the place to practice.

・first time practice
I choiced the vacant lot to practice of simple circle
(That's width was about two lanes.)

1 Master the basic of throttle work. (Don't care about the angle of bank )
During bank, you have to get rear traction. Care your throttle work. (The slow speed is no problem. If it is 250cc, gear is second. )

2 Hips are moved to the Inn. (Don't care about the angle of bank)
The outside knee is hung on the tank, and the inside knee is opened about 45 degrees by standing on tiptoe in the step. Shifting your hip will be little because of scare at first.
Turn until you will feel your form has stabilized. It will continue till feelings that hips come off from the seat completely or outside tiptoe come off from the step. (Finally, it will make sense even your hip not completely coming off.)

3 Increase the angle of bank.
You will get knee down if your form is good. Too much hip shifting will make falling from the motorcycle. I had fallen once.. If you feel unstable, return to 2. Then, raise the angle of bank. The knee rubs before the limit of the bank corner and the limit of the tires if it is a usual motorcycle.




However, it is still impossible in a usual corner.
Let’s practice more deeply. For example, character of 8 circle.


・The second practice
To stabilize your knee down, I will explains in detail.
Refer to here for the person cannot knee down in the first practice.

1 Confirm your throttle work.
You have to keep a little open of throttle during bank. It doesn't stabilize with off throttle.

2 Relax your hand.
Always prepare to opens throttle softly. (Open it when you get slipping.)

3 The outside thigh is on the seat.
Though it seems unstably, you will feel the connection of your body and the motorcycle when you get accustomed. It is impressive! The tiptoe of the outside foot is firmly used.

4 Suppresses the step by thumb of outside foot.
Your outside tiptoe will get ground, if your inside knee open is insufficient. Increases open degree.

5 You have to leave your head center.
Do not thrust your head internally. Image that steering handle hits ear.

6 Keep your eyes on the exit of the curve.

7 Keep your waist straight.
If you feel the twist or expand of your waist, it is sign of too much hang.

Well, the form might be considerably understood from this. In addition, the limit in the angle of bank should be able to be understood.

It is very important to know the limit in the angle of bank. Fear will be disappeared and you will make form easily.





Even if hip does not shift from the seat completely, you will get knee down as you see the movie. It was a problem of the angle of bank.



・The third practice
You will be not able to knee down in the normal curve even If it is possible in the vacant lot. It is because the speed in the normal curve. It needs more stable riding. Do not workout in normal curve. Return to the vacant lot and improve your skill more.

1 You have to make form before brake.
Deceleration G have to be caught by the waist, bank the motorcycle while releasing the brake little by little. (A rear brake is dragged only a little, and you can control the line.)

2 Make the knee down quickly.
The knee down is basically in the first half of the curve. In the latter half of the curve you have to make acceleration. You can get quick bank by reverse-steer of wheel. If you know the limit of the bank, and the form is perfect, it will be done in very short term.   

3 Consider the clipping point (It is the place in which you close Inn most in curves).
It is the most important terms in curve. From brake, bank, knee down, to clipping point. You will make under steer if it is not possible, and it is very dangerous in a general road. A lot of people can not consider clipping point actually. (If you practice in two lanes width, clipping point is almost the place where you get knee down.)
At first, make your eye on clipping point, and after get accustomed move your eyes to the exit of the curve. Consider the clipping point in various curves. Your cornering will change.

4 load your weight on the outside foot when the traction is put on rear tire.
Presumptuously, I will explain.
I found it! Up to now, I hung off the Inn side forcedly. But it was mistake. True Knee down is different from hang off.

With your thigh, you have to put your weight on your motorcycle vertically at any bank angle. Don't put your weight on Inner of motorcycle axis. And straddled by the outside foot against centrifugal force. For that, you have to make rear traction during banking.

It is as if world is inclined. Your weight is vertically added, and the world of the circumference has inclined. Frankly speaking, the image of hang off was completely come off. Surprising! It stabilizes ..Terrible...
The outside load. It is the same as skiing.



In addition, the arm in the outside hold the tank to suppresses centrifugal force outside. For that reason, SuperSports' tank is extending outside.

It is the one that I want everybody to taste.

You will flap in a usual corner from now on. But never forget!
It is very dangerous to get knee down in a usual corner. Because there is no safety zone.
